Holding on to New Orleans

August 28, 2012

While another hurricane bears down on New Orleans, it’s worth reflecting on the past experience there, and the tremendous spirit of those who stayed and rebuilt. Kenyon students  were among the many hard workers who came to help out. We stayed in FEMA tents and even ate C rations (about as good as they’re famous for). But that was just for a week–nothing compared to those who stayed and stood by their homes. Today the convention center and the French Quarter are exciting again; we loved our microbiology meeting there.  New Orleans is a lot better prepared than they were, but they’ll still need help, so let’s be ready to pitch in.
