Autism: Immune disorder
August 26, 2012
And now, back to blaming Mom–for immune disorder during pregancy.
A surprising amount of autism seems to correlate with excessive immune response, particularly in the womb, from which a child later develops autism. Influenza and asthma in mother, as well as asthma in the child, seem to correlate with autism.
The hypothesis is that we all get too few parasites to “train” our immune systems–which evolved for optimal performance in the presence of parasites. Doctors are so intent on this hypothesis that they’re treating autism with pig worms–worms that cannot reproduce in the human, but can live long enough to regulate the immune system.

Interesting – how long has this been around? If I remember correctly, I first saw something like this in Peter Watts Maelstrom.
