Sea lions in Central Park
My one “true vacation” this summer, I’ve been out in NY visiting my parents in Katonah and my sister in NY. Here are the awesome sea lions of Central Park Zoo. A small zoo, just enough for one very hot afternoon in the sun. The sea lions knew it was feeding time, and were eager to do absolutely anything to get that fish in the mouth. They clapped at the audience, kissed their trainers, and climbed to the top of the highest rock. Sure beats eating squid and getting eaten by orcas, the general fate of sea lions wild and “free.”
Well it won’t be long before another kind of wildlife returns to Kenyon. August always feels like a ski jump: you slide down ever faster, then up and land in the thick of the academic year.
What was your favorite animal adventure this summer?

Hard to say, but right now, I’ve got a number of (apparently) young adult Anna’s hummingbirds hanging out around my feeders, chasing each other, and gorging on C&H sugar solution. It’s fun to watch, and it’s also fun to see how quickly they realize I’m the source of the sugar and come to bug me when the feeder is getting low or fermented. As time goes on, the youngsters also get more sophisticated about sneaking in to feed without getting chased. They aren’t quite as dumb as one might think.
