iPad for Orangutan
June 12, 2012
The hot item in our lab right now is of course the new iPad for our online lab notebooks. But it seems we’re not alone. Orangutans at the Miami zoo like their iPad too. Orangutans like to finger paint, and to admire videos of themselves. Who doesn’t?
Now, they can even videoconference with orangs at other zoos, thanks to the Apps for Apes program.
What do you think orangs should conference about?

How to improve their conditions, obviously. Occupy the enclosures! Wait a minute, they do. Never mind…
I think your plants need more watering.Occupy the pots!
Seriously, though, orangutans have a reputation for being escape artists. Personally, I’d only give them iPads in a facility where they are happy, and where there’s no way they can link into anything important. But that’s just me.
Wonder what they think of Angry Birds?
I’m surprised this took me so long – the virtues (or otherwise) of various methods of categorising the books in a library!
You’re right of course. No one can better explore L-Space than an orangutan LIbrarian. Actually, I wonder if there’s a national association of librarians who would be willing to sponsor some orangutan enrichment activities?
